Provincia di Livorno
The Livorno Province is a local government authority formed by 20 municipalities. It occupies a total surface of 1.217 Km2 (around 5% of the regional territory) along the Tyrrhenian coast. It counts 326.444 inhabitants.
The Livorno Province is characterized by different productive systems, which are nevertheless all deeply connected to the same natural resource: that is the sea. Hence, we find ports, chemical and metallurgical industrial poles, but also the tourist sector is a very important resources for the local economy. All these sectors implies high pressures on the local environment.
Moreover, the Livorno Province represents the main area of energy production within the Tuscany Region. Large energy plants are dislocated on the territory, and fuel refineries, fuel, biofuel and gas storehouses can be found along the coast.
As a consequence, from a sustainable development viewpoint, energy policies are extremely important within the activities undertaken by the local authority. For this reason the local authority has developed an energy strategic plan aimed at reducing progressively the GHG emissions, safe energy, promoting energy efficiency in the industrial and private sector and at introducing a more extensive use of renewable resources.

Provincia di Ferrara
The Province of Ferrara is located north-east of the Italian peninsula, within the Region of Emilia-Romagna. The northern borders are marked by the Po river, while the southern borders on the Reno river, which cross the provinces of Bologna and Ravenna. It counts 350.000 inhabitants, which are mainly located in the city of Ferrara and on the coast.
The Province of Ferrara is completely level. The territory has developed through the years a deep connection with land and water: in fact the land now cultivated has been taken from sea and swamps with a long process of land reclamation. This close connection with the surrounding environment is also perceivable by looking at the extremely high number of bicycles and cycle tracks, which cover the whole territory of the province.
For what concerns the economy of the territory, agriculture has always been the main activity. It gives work to the 8% of the population, the double of the national average. The industrial sector, with its 35.000 enterprises (the vast majority of them SME) occupies 35% of the population, while the tertiary the 57%.
Recently the Province has invested a lot in R&D activities, creating in the city of Ferrara a technological hub, which collaborates with new businesses to foster innovation.
